Le conditionnel What would you do.....?

How do you form the conditional tense in French? take the infinitive of the verb, and end the following endings: je ais tu......ais il / elle / on... ait nous......ions vous iez ils/elles......aient don’t forget to drop the “e” off the end of -re verbs such as perdre, conduire, and connaitre.

Let’s try it with these verbs..... je – parler (I would speak....) nous – étudier mes amis – voyager Donald – écrire un Kristin – acheter une voiture de sport Corey – louer une décapotable tu – conduire une moto Kyle – rouler vite

When do you use it? When you want to say what you or someone else would do in a certain situation. “Dans cette situation, j’appellerais á la police!

Je perdrais mon permis de conduire!

À ta place.....

À ta place.....j’appellerais à la police!

And the irregulars? Rappelez-vous des quatre verbes irréguliers que nous avons étudiés avec le futur?

And the irregulars? The same four that you had in the future tense: faire – je ferais mes devoirs! (fer-) être - je serais nerveuse! (ser-) aller – j’irais avec toi! (ir-) avoir – j’aurais mes livres.... (aur-) plus some others.....

A couple of things to note.... It is necessary to use “y” with “aller” with no place is mentioned EXCEPT for when you use the future or conditional. par exemple: “J’y vais maintenant.” BUT “J’irais bientôt. Attention! Note the spelling changes in verbs like acheter and se lever in the future and conditional. J’achèterais cette voiture! Nous nous lèverions très tard les samedis! The conditional is often used to soften a request. Can you think of an example?
