What is a compound tense? It is also called “Complex Tense”. It is a tense that requires an “Auxiliary Verb” in addition to the Ending at the end of the Verb Stem. Auxiliary?

What is an “Auxiliary Verb”? It is another verb necessary to complete some tenses like the Perfect and the Plu-Perfect. Often the verbs -Avoir (to have, i gael) or -Être (to be, i fod) Are used.

Let me show you what I mean with an example using the Perfect tense of “Jouer” (to play, i Chwarae). ilajoué hehasplayed Auxiliary verb In this case “to have” Past Participle form of Active Verb

So if I know the present and the imperfect tense of “to have” or “to be” + the Past Participle of the active verb, I can construct the Perfect and Plu-Perfect tenses in French Yep! You could put it into this formula... Present tense of “to have” or “to be” Past Participle of Active verb Perfect Tense Imperfect tense of “to have” or “to be” Past Participle of Active verb Plu- Perfect Tense Click on me if you have forgotten what these tenses are in English or Welsh and go to slides 8,9 and 10 lesson 1.
