Le Pronom Interrogatif «lequel»

Usage To ask the question «which one?», you need to use a form of lequel.

Formes Lequel has four forms. They are: MasculineFeminine Singularlequellaquelle Plurallesquelslesquelles

Formation Notice that to form this pronoun, you take le, la, or les + the correct form of quel. le + quel = lequella + quelle = laquelle les + quels = lesquels les + quelles = lesquelles

Usage When using this pronoun, you choose the form that agrees with the noun that it is replacing. Ex. Je vais acheter ce col roulé. Lequel?

En plus... Ex. J’aime ces chaussures. Lesquelles? Je vais essayer la mini-jupe. Laquelle?

Finalement... Ex. Voici deux robes. Laquelle veux-tu acheter? **Note that when making a choice between two items, you need to use the singular form (i.e. which one) if the item itself is singular (i.e. replacing shoes would be plural since the item itself is plural.)

Le Pronom Démonstratif «celui» Celui means «the one.» It has four forms: MasculineFeminine Singularceluicelle Pluralceuxcelles

Formation Notice that you form this pronoun by connecting ce (c’) to a stress pronoun: ce + lui = celuic’ + elle = celle c’ + eux = ceux c’ + elles = celles

Usage You can use a form of celui to say...  this one  that one  these ones  those ones In order to do this, you must hook –ci or là after the form of celui. Celui CANNOT stand alone!

Exemples... Quelle mini-jupe préfères-tu? Celle-ci ou celle-là? (This one or that one?)

Continué... Je vais acheter ce sac. Je vais acheter celui-là. (I’m going to buy that one.)

Continué... J’adore ceux-là! (ces gilets-là) (I love those!) ***Notice that if you are choosing between two items, you can use –ci to denote the one closest to you (this one) and –là to denote the item farther away (that one.)

Pratiquez!

1. Qu’est-ce que tu penses de ces mocassins? -___Lesquels___? -Les verts. Ils sont chic! -Moi, je préfère ___ceux___-là.

2. Quelle robe préfères-tu? ___celle___-ci ou ___celle___-là? - Je préfère ___celle___-là.

3. Tu as acheté un débardeur? -Oui. -____Lequel_____? -____Celui_____-ci. -Pourquoi pas ___celui___-là? -Parce qu’il est ringard.

4. Quelles bretelles aimes-tu? -____Celles____ -là, à côté des gants bleus foncés. -Je ne les vois pas. Ce sont ___lesquelles___?
