The Present Tense in Spanish = Time to take a quiz!
I see a truck. Do you speak German? He doesn’t like chocolate! We’re learning French. You are wonderful students! Marc and Nicole have two kids. They’re coming over tonight. Simple present: one word Present Progressive: be + -ing: “am doing, are doing, is doing, etc.” – sometimes used as immediate future
Simple present only, no progressive. Yo hablo español. Miro la televisión en este momento. Questions do not require a helping verb (more on questions later) ¿Tomas un café? Negation: Put “no” before the verb No escucho la radio.
Conjugate: to change the form of a verb depending on who’s doing the action I speak you speak he speaks we speak you all speak they speak
Infinitive: the simplest form of a verb. In English: begins with TO to speak, to dance, to finish, to choose, to make, to read, to sell In Spanish: ends with –AR, -ER, or –IR hablar, bailar, terminar, escojer, hacer, leer, vender
Regular / Irregular: a verb is irregular if it does not follow the typical pattern of conjugation Regular in English: I speak, you speak, he speaks, we speak, you speak, they speak. Irregular in English: to be: I am, you are, he is, we are, you are, they are. (We don’t say “I be”, etc.)
We need to review the subject pronouns first: SingularPlural 1 st personyo = Inosotros = we 2 nd persontú = you Usted (Ud.) = You formal vosotros = you (plural, informal, used in parts of Spain) Ustedes (Uds.) = you all (plural) 3 rd personél = he, it ella = she, it ellos = they (masculine or mixed) ellas = they (feminine)
Review the “pronouns” PowerPoint and come back later
