Exercise 1

Les adjectifs In pairs, find the English for each adjective (Try not to use the dictionary) In French, most adjectives come after the noun. There are two different spellings for each adjective in French: masculine and feminine: Eg: un petit café (a small café) une petite banque (a small banque)

Mini plenary Who is able to say what there is in their town ? Are we now able to use adjectives to describe places in town and using a modal verb to say what you can do there.

The modal verb pouvoir Écris en français 1) À Bath, on peut faire les magasins au centre commercial. 2) À Bath, on peut visiter la cathédrale et le musée. 3) À Bath, on peut boire un café. 4) À Bath, on peut aller au cinéma. 5) À Bath, on peut aller au zoo. 6) À Bath, on peut se promener en bateau. 7) À Bath, on peut se promener dans les parcs. 8) À Bath, on ne peut pas faire du ski. In Bath, we can go shopping at the shopping centre. In Bath, we can visit the cathedral and the museum.. In Bath, we can drink coffee. In Bath, we can go to the cinema. In Bath, we can go to the zoo. In Bath, we can go on a boat trip. In Bath, we can have a walk at the parcs. In Bath, we cannot go skiing.

The infinitive is the form of the verb that you can find in a dictionary. In English, it starts with ‘to’ eg to jump, to skip In French, the infinitive of verbs ENDS in: -er -ir -re

You may already know that after OPINIONS, you use the INFINITIVE of the verb:- eg j’aime jouer au golf j’adore faire du ski opinion infinitive

‘ on peut’ + infinitive means ‘one can...’ Example: Dans ma ville, on peut voir (la tour). =In my town, one can see (the tower) Infinitive

Dans ma ville, on peut voir....Dans ma ville, on peut voir le musée

Dans ma ville, on peut voir....Dans ma ville, on peut voir le château

Dans ma ville, on peut voir.... Dans ma ville, on peut voir la cathédrale

You can use different verbs after ‘on peut’

Dans ma ville, on peut aller à....Dans ma ville, on peut aller à la piscine

Dans ma ville, on peut aller à....Dans ma ville, on peut aller au cinéma Don’t forget! à + le = au

Dans ma ville, on peut visiter...Dans ma ville, on peut visiter la plage

To make a sentence NEGATIVE: On NE peut PAS + infinitive EG On ne peut pas faire du patin à glace.

To summarise: on peut = one/you can On ne peut pas = one/you cannot visiter = visit aller à = go to voir = see

Exercise 3 Work in groups and produce a short but detailed paragraph (30 words). Decide who in your group should present the paragraph. Your peers will grade your presentation with reasons.  Use the orange sheet to help you make more complex sentences. You may also use the grades sheet to direct you to make your paragraph to a top grade one.  Include places in town, adjectives  What you can do (or NOT!) in your town (use ‘on peut’ / ‘on ne peut pas’)  Include connectives + opinions
