Lesson Le Négatif We have already learned the basic negative construction in French- adding ‘ne (n’)…pas’ to a sentence will make that sentence negative but have you ever wanted to say ‘no one, nothing, never…’? In French we have specific negative expressions to say just that! ne…jamais ne…rien ne…personne ne…plus ne…que ne…ni…ni

Lesson Le Négatif ne…jamais- never ne…rien- nothing ne…personne- no one ne…plus-no more/ anymore ne…que- not more than/ only ne…ni…ni- neither nor These negative expressions can be placed in a sentence just the same way as ‘ne…pas’ Examples: I don’t see/ I see no one Je ne vois pas/ Je ne vois personne She doesn’t have her bag/ she has nothing! Elle n’a pas son sac/ Elle n’a rien What do you notice about the placement of the negative expressions in each of these two sentences? With the expression ‘ne…que’ we often add ‘de’ after ‘que’! With ‘ne…ni…ni’ we add a noun in between each part of the negative expression.

Lesson Le Négatif Let’s Practice! Write each sentence in French using either ‘ne…pas’ or one of our new negative expressions, depending on the meaning of the sentence in English! I don’t go to the movie theater. __________________ I never go to the movie theater! ____________________ She doesn’t see her cousin. ___________________ She sees no one! ____________________ We don’t speak Spanish. ______________________ We only speak French. ______________________ I don’t believe her. ______________________ I don’t believe neither her nor him! __________________________
