REMEMBER! Limparfait can be translated four different ways in English. For example, On se battait: –People were fighting. –People used to fight. –People would fight. –People fought.

Uses Habitual actions Describe physical, mental, and emotional states of being in the past Convey actions or states of being that are considered background context, not the main focus of the story Ongoing actions or states that were in progress when something else occurred.

Uses continued Use with venir de + an infinitive to say something just happened: –Ils venaient de mourir. (They had just died.)
