The Subjunctive (in the present tense)

What is the subjunctive mood? The subjunctive mood is used in French: t to indicate mood, (wishes, desires, necessities, doubts, suppositions). o express want, preference, or need. o express opinion and possibility.

Its nearest approximation in English is…. may or might (or should) Here are some examples….

I dont think youre right (but Im not sure)… Je ne crois pas que tu aies raison. Im afraid he may understand… Jai peur quil comprenne… I dont want him to leave. Je ne veux pas quil parte.

How is the Subjunctive formed? Fortunately the subjunctive is easy to form for most verbs. Take the ils part of the verb in the present tense and take off the ent ending. (i.e. ils arrivent…becomes arriv ). This gives us the STEM of the subjunctive verb…

We then add the appropriate ending to the STEM. PRONOUN We then add the appropriate ending to the STEM. This depends on which PRONOUN we use.je tu il / elle / on nous vous ils / elles for……add e es e ions iez ent

For example… jetuilellenousvousilselles rentre rentres rentre rentrions rentriez rentrent finisse finisses finisse finissions finissiez finissent vende vendes vende vendions vendiez vendent rentrerfinirvendre er verbs (rentrer) ir verbs (finir) re verbs (vendre)

Sadly, there are a few common irregular verbs in the subjunctive Aller Avoir Etre Vouloir Faire Pouvoir Savoir Prendre Venir Boire To go To have To be To want To do To be able To know To take To come To drink These are…

Well look at them later.

HAS The Subjunctive HAS to be used after certain common expressions. Usage opinions, emotions, impersonal expressionsexpressions about getting someone to do something These are usually expressions about opinions, emotions, impersonal expressions, or expressions about getting someone to do something. Here are some common examples….

Il faut que… Il est nécessaire nécessaire que… Il vaut mieux que Il suffit que… Il est possible que… Pour que… Afin que… Avant que… One has to (one must)… It is necessary that… Its better that… It is sufficient that… It is possible that… So that… In order that…(formal) Before… Use the Subjunctive after these phrases.

Sans que… Bien que… A moins que… Vouloir que… Désirer Désirer que… Avoir besoin que… Avoir peur que… Il est étonnant que… …and these too ! Without… Although… Unless… To want / wish that… To desire that… To need / want that… To fear that… Its surprising that…

Lets see some examples. Bien que jaie jaie soif… Il faut que je finisse finisse mes devoirs. Il est important quelle prenne… Nous demandons que tu lises. Jai peur quil tombe. Avant quils boivent… …il vaut mieux quils mangent Although Im thirsty… I must finish my homework. It is important that she takes… We ask that you read. I fear he may fall. Before they drink… …it would be better that they eat.

learn We have to learn the common irregular verbs in the subjunctive.

Now try these simple exercises: Change the verb in brackets to its correct form. …easy…

So try these too: Translate these phrases into French. 1)I must leave. 2)Before you eat… 3)I want you to know. 4)Although I can play… 5)It is necessary that you go. 6)It is sufficient that you drink tea. 7)…unless you do your homework. 8)So that they are rich. Il faut que je parte. Avant que vous mangiez… Je veux que tu saches. Bien que je puisse jouer… Il est nécessaire que tu ailles. Il suffit que vous buviez du thé. A moins que tu fasses tes devoirs. Pour quelles soient riches. …Well done !!

Thats it ! Simple !
