Adjective-- ex. fun, smelly, cool, purple a word that describes people, places, and things. ex. fun, smelly, cool, purple In French, adjectives must agree with two things: number (singular or plural) gender (masculine or feminine)
Singular Adjectives (Just one person) Masculine– no change Paul est brillant. Pierre est poli. Feminine– add an -E Alice est brillante. Chloé est polie.
If the word ends in a silent –e, there is no change. sympathique timide sincère égoïste optimiste pessimiste agréable désagréable
Plural Adjectives (Two or more people) Masculine If there is at least one male in a group, just add –S. Nous sommes intelligents. Vous êtes fatigués. Ils sont patients.
Plural Adjectives (Two or more people) Feminine For a group of all girls, add –ES. Vous êtes fatiguées. Nous sommes polies. Elles sont indépendantes.
Note: Even if the word ends in é, add an -e, -s or -es. Il est fatigué. Elle est fatiguée. Ils sont fatigués. Elles sont fatiguées.
One Exception One adjective NEVER changes: sympa. Ils sont sympa. Elle est sympa. Nous sommes sympa.
