THE VERB ETRE TO BE An IRREGULAR VERB.
Les négatifs et l’interrogation
Transcription de la présentation:

Français 1

1. Unlike the regular –ER verbs that you have learned so far, the verb être is an irregular verb.

 These verbs do NOT follow a pattern. Instead of memorizing a set of endings and applying them to the stem of an –ER infinitive, you will have to memorize the entire word.

2. Conjugation for the verb être…

Je suis Nous sommes Tu esVous êtes Il/Elle/ est On Paul These noun Anne subjects take Le garçon the same form La fille as their pronouns! Ils/Elles sont Paul et Lise These noun Anne et Lise subjects take Les garçons the same form Les filles as their pronouns!

 NOTE: The framework of the chart is the same as what you learned for –ER verbs. You will need to memorize an entire word for the forms of être – not just an ending!

 A. to describe Par exemple – Je suis cool. Il est américain. Vous êtes intelligent.

 B. to talk about location Par exemple – Nous sommes à Atlanta. Elles sont en France. Tu es de Paris.

 To make a sentence with être negative, you will still put ne and pas around the verb.  Note that ne will shorten down to n’ before a vowel.

Affirmatif Je suis américain.

 Négatif Je ne suis pas américain.

Affirmatif Tu es amusant.

 Négatif Tu n’es pas amusant.

Affirmatif Il est sociable.

 Négatif Il n’est pas sociable.

Affirmatif Nous sommes en France.

 Négatif Nous ne sommes pas en France.

 To ask a question with être, you can still use the four methods previously introduced.

 Change the tone of your voice and stick a ? at the end of a statement. Elle est américaine? (Is she American?)

 Flip-flop the position of the subject and the verb and stick a hyphen in between. Est-elle américaine? (Is she American?)

 NOTE: You will not need the “mystery –t-” for the il/elle form this time!

 Place in front of any statement. Est-ce qu’elle est américaine? (Is she American?)

 Place at the end of any statement. (Like a tag question!) Elle est américaine, n’est-ce pas? (She is American, isn’t she?)
