French 1, Chapter 5 Section 1 Question Words French 1, Chapter 5 Section 1

French Question Words: Quand Pourquoi Que / Quoi Où Comment Qui Avec Qui

Using est-ce que in questions Est-ce que can begin a question, as you know. It translates as “do/does” in present tense. Literally, est-ce que means “is it that.” Question words are usually followed by est-ce que, unless they are followed by the verb être. The question word qui (who) is followed directly by a verb.

EXAMPLE: Est-ce que tu joues au tennis? Do you play tennis?

EXAMPLES: Quand est-ce que tu joues au foot? When do you play soccer? Pourquoi est-ce que tu aimes faire de la photo? Why do you like to do photography? Comment est-ce que tu fais du surf? How do you surf?

EXAMPLE: Qui joue de la guitare? Who plays guitar?

EXAMPLE: Où est mon caméscope? Where is my video camera?

Contractions with “que” Que changes to qu’ before a vowel. Examples: Est-ce que tu fais du bowling?  Est-ce qu’il fait du bowling? Est-ce que nous faisons de la luge  Est-ce qu’elles font de la luge?
