Les verbes en -ER A verb is a word that expresses _____________. The infinitive is the basic, unchanged form of the verb. Verb infinitives in French have one of have three endings: -er, -ir, -re. Most verbs that end in –er follow the same pattern of conjugation (making the verb match the subject). To conjugate an –er verb, first you need to take off the –er. That leaves you with the “stem”. parler  parl- écouter  écout- aimer  aim- an action

parler  parl- écouter  écout- aimer  aim- Now, take the stem and add the ending that matches the subject. PARLER = to talk je parle tu parles il parle elle parle on parle nous parlons vous parlez ils parlent elles parlent I talk you talk he/it talks she/it talks one talks we talk you talk they (m.) talk they (f.) talk X This is called the present tense, because it shows what is happening right now. “Je parle” can be translated as “I talk”, “I am talking”, and “I do talk”. Three for the price of one!
