About Tôkoku, painter and photographer Most of portrait photos of French soldiers are taken at Shimizu Tôkoku (1841-1907) studio in Tokyo. How, chosen as painter for Siebold in 1861, he learned the photography from him, cf. 呉秀三, 『シーボルト先生 3』 、(平凡社、東洋文庫) His reputation as photographer in Europe : « Nos journaux parlent, avec grands éloges, de certaines épreuves photographiques reçues du Japon où elles furent obtenues, il y a peu de temps, par un japonais, M. Toocokee, de Yokohama.

The photo of the officers / students sent from Kôbe The photo of the officers / students sent from Kôbe. Thye are just about to fight in Kyûshû. The names of killed students are marked by a cross. « Une promotion d’officiers-élèves des armés spéciales, 1877 »
