Superlatives Regular and Irregular

Overview Superlative adverbs express the idea that something is “the most __________” OR “the least ___________.” Unlike comparatives, superlatives require a definite article.

Definite Articles in French Masculinele Femininela Pluralles Vowell’

adjectives The placement of the superlative for adjectives depends on the placement of the adjectives in a normal sentence. le plus/moins + adjective + noun le + noun + le plus/moins + adjective If the adjective is placed in front of the noun, than the superlative must also be placed in front of the noun.

examples Elle est la plus belle fille du monde. Il est le garçon le plus intelligent dans la classe.

Nouns le plus/moins + de + noun Examples: Julie a les plus de crayons à Ray-Pec J’achète les plus de vêtements.

Verbs verb + le plus/moins Examples: Le chien mange le plus dans ma famille. Les poissons rouges nagent le plus des animaux.

Irregular Comparisons SingularPlural Masculinemeilleurmeilleurs Femininemeilleuremeilleures

Irregular Superlatives To use these forms in a superlative you must add a definite article. le meilleur (masculine singular) la meilleure (feminine singular) les meilleurs (masculine plural) les meilleures (feminine plural) To say the worst in French, we say le pire or les pires.

Bien-well The French adverb bien (well) also has special comparative and superlative forms. The comparative form is mieux (better) In the superlative, bien becomes le mieux (the best) Because bien is an adverb, both bien and mieux only come after a verb.
