2 Remind (as always) why new nouns are presented on blue/red and emphasise the how the strategy underpins memorisation.

4 X Y Z J Q U W G K R C E A further slide for quick practice. Worth mentioning that these are obviously just a small selection of foods and there is a much more extensive list in their vocab books. Tell them the best idea is for them to self select about twenty foods in total of their choice and learn them. Tell them to select based on their strongest likes and dislikes as well as those of their family as these will be the most relevant words for them.

10 Plenary Look at the following list of words and give each one a number rating 1-5 based on how well you know the word. Look at the VKS (Vocabulary Knowledge Scale) below: 1. I don’t remember having seen this word before. 2. I have seen this word before but I don’t know what it means. 3. I have seen this word before and I think it means…. 4. I know this word: it means……. 5. I can use this word in a sentence, e.g………. (ref: Wesche M & Paribakht T.S. (1996) “Assessing second language vocabulary knowledge: depth versus breadth”, The Canadian Modern Language Review 53, 1:28) Many pupils have done this kind of plenary in year 7. It is worth collecting these sheets in at the end from your pupils as it is really helpful information to inform your planning for the next lesson. If there is time, encourage pupils to realise which words they have remembered easily and which words are more difficult and why this is. Ask perhaps for pupils to come up with a good visual/aural cue to ‘fix’ the difficult words in their memories.
