3 If your organization intends to present a wreath during this ceremony please let us know by email at henri-chapelle@abmc.govhenri-chapelle@abmc.gov or by fax at 0032/(0)87/68.67.17 no later than May 11th. All the wreaths will be laid on the stands by the boy scouts prior to the beginning of the ceremony except for the dignitaries wreaths. Nevertheless, each association will be recognized during the ceremony, just as they have been during past ceremonies. All wreaths need to be delivered at the cemetery before noon on May 23th. If you need further information please do not hesitate to contact us. Comme lannée dernière, ces gerbes et couronnes, seront déposées par nos soins avant le début de la cérémonie. 4 BRIEF HISTORY OF MEMORIAL DAY: Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day. There is also evidence that organized women's groups in the South were decorating graves before the end of the Civil War: a hymn published in 1867, "Kneel Where Our Loves are Sleeping" by Nella L. Sweet carried the dedication "To The Ladies of the South who are Decorating the Graves of the Confederate Dead". While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it's difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day. It is more likely that it had many separate beginnings; each of those towns and every planned or spontaneous gathering of people to honor the war dead in the 1860's tapped into the general human need to honor our dead, each contributed honorably to the growing movement that culminated in Gen Logan giving his official proclamation in 1868. It is not important who was the very first, what is important is that Memorial Day was established. Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all. BREF HISTORIQUE DU MEMORIAL DAY: Le Memorial Day, initialement appelé Decoration Day est un jour de commémoration pour ceux qui ont donné leur vie au service des Etats-Unis. Plusieurs villes des Etats-Unis prétendent être à lorigine de cette fête. Il a été prouvé que, dans le Sud, des organisations féminines fleurissaient des tombes avant la fin de la guerre civile. Un hymne publié en 1867 Agenouillons-nous là où nos êtres chers reposent de Nella L. Sweet mena la célébration Aux femmes du Sud qui fleurissent les tombes des soldats confédérés tombés aux champs. Bien que la ville de Waterloo dans lEtat de New York ait été officiellement déclarée berceau du Memorial Day en 1966 par le Président Lyndon Johnson, il est difficile den prouver lorigine. Il est plus que probable quil y ait plusieurs lieux dorigine: chacune des villes et chaque démonstration, organisée ou spontanée, pour honorer les victimes de guerre en 1860, ont puisé dans le besoin que lHomme a dhonorer ses disparus, chacune a contribué honorablement au mouvement qui a atteint son apogée par la proclamation officielle du Général Logan en 1868. Finalement limportant nest pas qui était a lorigine du Memorial Day mais que ce jour ait été établi. Le Memorial Day est une inspiration à la réconciliation et une invitation au rassemblement pour honorer ceux qui ont fait lultime sacrifice.
