vendredi, 20 septembre 1914 My dear wife We arrived at our destination and I spent the night in a church. I slept for (only) five hours but in the morning we ate some bread and drank some black coffee. It was awful! I thought of you and the children and breakfast in our little kitchen! Fortunately, I have met some brave men. This war will be long and difficult but we will win! We will save France! We will fight the Germans! We have to fight! One man who is called Pierre lives in Calais. He is quite tall and has blue eyes and short straight hair which reveals his big ears! He has two children like us who are called Catherine, Alain and Renée. Catherine is 10, Alain is 8 however Renee the youngest is 6. Pierre seems to be really confident but last night I saw that in reality he is quite frightened. But its normal. I think a lot about you and the children. Dont despair Suzanne. I know that one day we will liberate France and I will return home. Your husband/Goodbye my dear wife Alexandre

Ton mari/Au revoir ma chère femme Alexandre
