3 There are different verbs for talking about different meals in French.
manger le petit déjeuner to eat breakfast manger to eat déjeuner to eat lunch manger/prendre le goûter to have tea / picnic / snack dîner to eat dinner The verb ‘prendre ’ is also used for ‘to have’ with either food or drink. This is information giving slide. It could be followed with a couple of active repetitions of ‘manger’ and ‘boire’. I would suggest having the class stand up and do the gestures. I put in a slide with the music for ease!

dînes dînez Slides for practising verbs conjugations – not to be done one after the other, unless the class more or less knows them well already and then they can all be done within 2 mins back to back. The music is just the verbs chanting backing track that we use. Student do the pronoun gestures the same with each verb but don’t say the pronouns, only the verb forms. The gestures ensure that the link between the meaning and the verb form is not lost. dîne dînent

préférer = to prefer Je préfère nouspréférons Tu préfères Vous préférez Pupils did préférer in year 7 but it is a v useful verb so does no harm to see it again. Il/elle préfère Ils/elles préfèrent

Bonjour! J’ai toujours faim le matin. Normalement au petit déjeuner je prends un chocolat chaud et des tartines. En France nous prenons le déjeuner à midi un peu plus tôt qu’en Angleterre. Et le déjeuner est le repas principal du jour. Chez moi nous prenons des radis au beurre comme entrée. J’aime beaucoup ça! Comme plat principal nous prenons de la viande et des légumes ou des pommes de terre. Après on prend du fromage suivi d’un yaourt et des fruits comme dessert. Le dimanche nous mangeons chez mes grands parents. Nous mangeons normalement du pâté comme entrée, de la viande comme un rôti de porc et des légumes, puis après une tarte au citron ou une glace. En France nous dînons tard à 20h. Je mange normalement de la soupe et du pain. Je n’aime pas la soupe! Après je mange des fruits – les français mangent beaucoup de fruits. A quelle heure mange-t-on le dîner en Angleterre? Et toi qu’est-ce que tu manges pour le déjeuner normalement? Bisous Caroline This reading should provide a fair degree of challenge as there are some new words. A lot of vocabulary is in their vocab books but you might want to make them work harder and look in dictionaries or set a limit for number of words they can look up? This is certainly a good text to use to help them identify and develop reading strategies with. As extension or homework, I think it would be good for pupils to translate the whole text into English too. 1 Caroline ne mange pas de déjeuner normalement. 6 Le dimanche Caroline mange le paté comme entrée. 2 Le matin elle boit du café 7 Les français dînent tard. 3 Les français déjeunent à midi. 8 Caroline n’aime pas les fruits. 4 En Angleterre le déjeuner est très tard. 9 Caroline mange de la soupe et du pain pour le dîner. 5 Caroline n’aime pas la soupe 10 Les français ne mangent pas beaucoup de fruits.

Compris un texte plus long p p For a quick plenary at this point a quick translation whole class of some verb conjugations given by you with a 3 second countdown would be good. E.g. You say ‘nous dînons ’ and count 1 – 2 – 3 and the whole class must respond ‘we have for dinner’ - also would work the other way round if the class is high ability. p
