2 How do you form the Passé Composé?
You take a helping verb, avoir or être and add the past participle…. Today we will look at avoir + past participle (which is how most verbs are formed)

3 How do you conjugate AVOIR?
J’ai Nous avons Tu as Vous avez Il/Elle/On a Ils/Elles ont

4 Forming the past participles….
With an –er verb drop the –er , add –é With an –ir verb  drop the –ir, add –i With an –re verb  drop the –re, add -u

5 Nous avons fermé la porte Vous avez maigri Ils ont entendu la musique.
Some examples…. J’ai chanté Tu as fini Il a vendu Nous avons fermé la porte Vous avez maigri Ils ont entendu la musique.

6 Change these from the present to the past:
1. je chante 2. il vend sa voiture 3. nous portons un jean. 4. tu siffles beaucoup. 5. ils dupent le client.

8 Of course, there are some irregular past participles
Of course, there are some irregular past participles!!! Here are a few examples: Avoir  eu Faire  fait Être  été obtenir  obtenu Vouloir  voulu reconnaître  reconnu Voirvu Ouvrir  ouvert

9 How would you say…. I studied for french yesterday? He got a tip? We wanted to buy a car? They chatted in class? You finished your homework?

10 How did you do? Merveilleux!
J’ai étudié pour le français hier Il a obtenu un pourboire. Nous avons voulu acheter une voiture? Ils ont bavardé en classe. Tu as fini tes devoirs.

11 With the Passé Composé and AVOIR
You will NOT make agreement! Ex: Elle a grossi Ex: Il a attend ses amis. Ex: Nous avons acheté une voiture

He removed Il a enlevé They worked Ils ont travaillé I did not obtain Je n'ai pas obtenu He ate  Il a mangé They saw Ils ont vu He said hello Il a salué You made/did Tu as fait She lost weight Elle a maigri We waited Nous avons attendu

You will ALWAYS make agreement with the SUBJECT! Ex: Elle est partie Ex: Nous sommes venu(e)s chez toi Ex: Ils se sont lavés

20 Passé Composé with être….
We arrived Nous sommes arrivé(e)s You became rich Tu es devenu(e) riche You all left Vous êtes parti(e)s I went Je suis allé(e) She died Elle est morte We went to the party. Nous sommes allé(e)s à la fête. She went out with a friend. Elle est sortie avec une amie.  He washed (himself). Il s’est lavé. She shaved. Elle s’est rasée.

21 Passé Composé with être….
She got dressed Elle s’est habillée We arrived at the party early Nous sommes arrivé(e)s à la boum tôt. She fell on the ground. Elle est tombée par terre. He was born January 5th. Il est né le 5 janvier. I went to the game. Je suis allé(e) au match. They came back home. Ils sont revenus à la maison. We left the restaurant Nous sommes partis du restaurant.

22 Passé Composé with avoir or être?
I got a scholarship. We chatted with him. He bought a car They stayed late. We got dressed. She said hello to him. The boys arrived at the game You went to the park.
