1 L’IMPARFAIT This tense is the EASIEST to master in French!
It is called l’Imparfait (or Imperfect) because it talks about actions that are continuous, on-going, repeated, habitual or incomplete or im-perfect in nature. There is only ONE irregular verb: ÊTRE

2 L’usage: The acronym: DR CAT helps us here:
Description Repetition Continual actions Age Time (on clock) ex: le chat était moche. ex: j’allais à l’école tous les jours ex: Soudain, la porte s’est ouverte quand je finissais mes devoirs. ex: Le Roi avait 98 ans quand il est mort. ex: il était midi quand nous sommes arrivés

3 Formation: Take NOUS form of regular PRESENT tense Remove –ONS ending
Add endings -AIS, -AIS, -AIT, -IONS, -IEZ, -AIENT to the new stem

4 ***ATTENTION*** ***Watch out for –GER verbs: manger – nous mangeons MANGE… Je mangeais, tu mangeais, il mangeait, nous mangions, vous mangiez, ils mangeaient (note how NOUS & VOUS forms lose the E because it is no longer needed due to presence of I to soften G in the imperfect ending – IONS)

5 ***ATTENTION*** ***Watch out for –CER verbs: lancer – nous lançons LANÇ… Je lançais, tu lançais, il lançait, nous lancions, vous lanciez, ils lançaient (note how NOUS & VOUS forms lose the Ç because it is no longer needed due to presence of I to soften C in the imperfect ending – IONS)

6 ÊTRE (= to be) J’étais Tu étais Il/ Elle / On était Nous étions Vous étiez Ils/elles étaient

7 S’ASSEOIR (= to sit down) **Note, it has TWO possible forms**
