1 Energy Performance Analysis: Winter Season
UCD Training February 28, 2019

2 Performance Analysis: Winter Season
Purpose Use simple indicator to study consumption over cold weather months and identify poor performing facilities in winter Indicator compares energy performance with a ratio-based weather normalizing method over a specific period of time Rationale When cold weather-induced consumption is removed, high energy consumption during the winter months is more apparent Works with both electric and natural gas heating

3 Weather Normalization - Brief
Background Assumes that energy consumption is materially influenced by factors such as weather Energy consumption required to heat a building is relatively proportional to the number of Heating Degree Days (HDD) over that period Correlates monthly energy consumption data with monthly HDD HDD are determined using a balance point, or base temperature, which is the outside temperature below which the building needs heating Typically graphed with HDD on the x-axis and consumption on the y-axis Once plotted, the regression line is the straight line that best fits through the points in the scatter chart. This line describes the model for that meter. Estimated baseload is where the regression line crosses the y-axis Represents a ratio-based (consumption/degree-days) weather normalization method

4 Weather Normalization - Brief
Linear regression – line is the model used for that meter Baseload

5 Performance Analysis: Winter Season
Methodology Uses energy consumption data and HDD from November 1 to April 30 of the school year Creates an energy intensity value for that period Removes effect of weather by dividing intensity value by HDD Resulting indicator ratio is used to compare schools Utilizes the following data from the UCD Utility consumption and floor areas Sources: Board Profile (EDU01) (Raw), Utility Consumption (EUC01) HDD from weather stations used in UCD Source: Weather Station Degree Days file – MEC_EDU - Documents

What’s Needed From the UCD Board Profile (EDU01) Date Range: FY 20XX Normalization: Raw Go to Tab: Asset List Note Raw data is used as you will be doing simple weather normalization using degree days in the indicator For this demo we are using m3 for natural gas and converting to ekWh

12 Performance Analysis: Winter Season
Natural Gas tab Highlight gas consumption values from November to April Create sum total for these 6 months Copy total value to worksheet column Nov-Apr Natural Gas Use

13 Performance Analysis: Winter Season
If other fuels exist, repeat process for each fuel tab This process must be repeated for each and every school that will be part of the analysis
