It is the second largest city in the province, the first is Montréal The city of Québec was founded by Samuel de Champlain in 1608, making it one of the oldest city in North America (400 ans) The name Kébec, was given by the Algonkian indians, meaning « where the river narrows »

3 L’HISTOIRE Iroquois indians had many « petits villages » along the banks of the St. Lawrence river Jacques Cartier, un explorateur français built a fort here in 1535 After de Champlain, the British captured Québec from 1759 to 1763 in the « guerre de 7 ans » The French general Louis-Joseph de Montcalm was defeated on “les plaines d’Abraham” by British general James Wolfe Québec remained British until the province of Canada was formed in 1840
