Indirect objects are the people in a sentence to/for whom the action of the verb occurs; eg. I’m talking to Pierre (To whom am I talking? > Pierre) I’m talking to him eg. He buys books for the students. (For whom does he buy books? > The students) He buys books for them Indirect object pronouns are the words that replace the indirect object, and they usually refer to a person.

These pronouns are often used with verbs followed by à: parler à (to talk to) demander à (to ask) dire à (to say to) donner à (to give to) téléphoner à (to phone) offrir à (to offer to) écrire à (to write to) répondre à (to reply to) Exception: penser à quelque chose (to think about something) uses the direct object pronoun.
