4 The verbs that take être… For the time being, just remember one thing:

6 Another way to remember these verbs is using the phrase FIVE PAIRS AND THREE SPARES The five pairs are: monter/ descendreto go up/ go down aller/ venirto go/ to come entrer/ sortirto go in/ go out naître/ mourirto be born/ to die arriver/ partirto arrive/ to leave The three spares are: rester – to stay tomber – to fall retourner – to return

7 Forming the Perfect Tense withêtre You need three things: 1.The correct part of the verb être – to be Je suisNous sommes Tu esVous êtes Il/elle/ on estils/elles sont 2. The past participle of the verb 3. The correct agreement on the past participle. Add e if the subject is feminine and s if the subject is plural.

8 With the verb être, you have to add an extra e at the end of the past participle if the subject is feminine and an extra s if the subject is plural. Je suis arrivée Je suis née Ma mère est descendue Ils sont rentrés Mes soeurs sont arrivées Agreement of the Past Participle
