4 The IMPARFAIT, or imperfect, is a verb tense in the past. It allows one to: Describe activities that people USED TO do as habit. Describe a state of mind or feeling. Set a scene in the past (to describe a setting rather than a specific action).

5 Notice the distinction between the use of the imparfait and that of the PASSÉ COMPOSÉ. The P. C. is used to relate specific actions that have been finished. The imparfait relates non-specific actions that were ongoing or habitual. The imparfait also relates past states and descriptions that are NOT specific actions.

6 COMMENT FORMER LIMPARFAIT

7 To write a verb in the imparfait, follow these steps: Conjugate the verb in the NOUS form of the present tense. Take off the -ONS. What is left is the front stem. Add these back stems: JE --> -AISNOUS --> -IONS TU --> -AISVOUS --> -IEZ ELLE --> -AITILS --> -AIENT

8 Exemple:FAIRE NOUS FAISONS remove -ONS JE FAISAISI used to make/do TU FAISAIS you … IL FAISAIT he … NOUS FAISIONS we … VOUS FAISIEZ you all, you (formal) … ELLES FAISAIENT they (f.) …

9 Exemple:AVOIR NOUSAVONS remove -ONS JAVAIS TU AVAIS ON AVAIT NOUS AVIONS VOUS AVIEZ ILS AVAIENT

10 The only verb that does not follow the rule about taking the front stem of the NOUS form is ÊTRE. Its front stem is ÉT-. JÉTAIS TU ÉTAIS ELLE ÉTAIT NOUS ÉTIONS VOUS ÉTIEZ ILS ÉTAIENT
