28 The Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) is one of the two subspecies of the Eastern Gorilla. There are two populations. One is found in the Virunga volcanic mountains of Central Africa, within three National Parks: Mgahinga, in south-west Uganda, Volcanoes, in north-west Rwanda; and Virunga in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The other is found in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Some primatologists say that the Bwindi population in Uganda may be a separate subspecies, though no description has been finished. As of Spring 2010, the estimated total number of Mountain Gorillas worldwide is 790. [excerpt - Wikipedia] Le gorille de montagne est un animal impressionnant mais très sociable et très pacifique. Les gorilles de montagne vivent en famille polygames, et chaque famille est guidée par un "dos argenté". C'est le mâle du groupe, qui est censé protéger toute la famille contre les dangers éventuels. Quand le dos argenté meurt, un autre gorille assez âgé pour supporter cette tâche le remplace ou le groupe se dissout. Si c'est le cas, les femelles vont rejoindre d'autres groupes et d'autres mâles, qui tuent les petits de sa nouvelle femelle pour être sûrs de n'avoir que des porteurs de leurs gènes. Schon seit den 1950er-Jahren wurde der Bestand der Berggorillas auf wenige hundert Tiere geschätzt; Ende der 1980er-Jahre zählte man rund 620 Tiere. Heute ist der Bestand auf rund 700 Tiere angewachsen – 2008 wurden im Bwindi-Wald 302 Tiere nachgewiesen und der Bestand im Virunga-Nationalpark auf 380 Individuen geschätzt. Sie sind damit die einzige Gorillapopulation mit steigendem Bestand. Die IUCN listet den Berggorilla aufgrund der geringen Population als „vom Aussterben bedroht“ (critically endangered). Neben der Lebensraumzerstörung, illegaler Jagd und Tierhandel sind diese Tiere auch durch Krankheiten gefährdet. Berggorillas gibt es in keinem Zoo. Die touristische Erschließung des Bwindi Impenetrable National Parks in Uganda – der als UNESCO-Weltnaturerbe anerkannt ist – sorgt zumindest dort für einen guten Schutz der Bwindi Gorillas vor Lebensraumzerstörung und Wilderei.
