Unité 3 Le passé composé avec ÊTRE
2
Le passé composé The passé composé is a PAST TENSE used to tell what has happened in the past. As its name implies, this tense is a COMPOUND VERB TENSE, which requires TWO VERBS---a helping verb and a past participle. YOU MUST HAVE BOTH VERBS!!!!
3
Le verbe auxiliaire There are 2 different helping verbs used to form the passé composé. They are: AVOIR & ÊTRE. Avoir is the most commonly used helping verb. There are certain verbs that use ÊTRE. We learned some of them last year. We will add to the list this year.
4
List of verbs which use ÊTRE as the auxiliary verb in the passé composé These verbs are called the “Dr & Mrs Vandertrampp” verbs. INFINITIF PARTICIPE PASSÉ D=devenir--------------devenu R=revenir---------------revenu M=mourir--------------mort R=rentrer---------------rentré S=sortir------------------sorti Continued on next slide…
5
INFINITIF PARTICIPE PASSÉ V=venir----------------venu A=arriver--------------arrivé N=naître---------------né D=descendre---------descendu E=entrer---------------entré R=retourner----------retourné T=tomber-------------tombé R=rester---------------resté A=aller-----------------allé M=monter------------monté P=partir---------------parti P=passer** ----------passé (**this verb will sometimes use AVOIR)
6
Part 1 After you have your subject, you will need the HELPING VERB---for now, this will be a present tense conjugation of the verb ÊTRE: JE -----SUISNOUS---SOMMES TU----ESVOUS ----ÊTES IL/ELLE -----ESTILS/ELLES----SONT
7
Put them together Subject: Je Form of ÊTRE as Auxiliary Verb: suis Action Verb (aller) in the Past Participle:allé Past tense sentence: Je suis allé(e) au cinéma. (I went to the movies.)
8
TO NOTE When using ETRE as the helping (auxiliary) verb in the passé composé, THERE MUST BE AGREEMENT(masculine/feminine/singular/plural ) of the PAST PARTICIPLE and the SUBJECT. This does NOT occur when using AVOIR* as the helping verb. *certain restrictions apply SO….feminine subjects will add on an extra E to the past participle. Add an “S” to the participle to make it plural. Sorry…it MUST happen.
9
Pratique Je---sortir= Nous---arriver= Tu---entrer= Sophie---rentrer= Les filles---aller= Mes oncles---partir= Notre soeur---rester=
10
Le negatif When making a sentence negative in the passé composé, the NE…PAS (or the ne…jamais, ne…plus, ne…rien & other negatives) will be placed AROUND THE AUXILIARY VERB ONLY Example: Je ne suis pas allé(e) au Mexique. Vous n’êtes pas arrivés en retard. Les garçons ne sont pas venus à 8heures.
