A theoretical view on prospection and defender behaviors
strategic behavior: A theoretical view on prospection and defender behaviors Prospection Defense Architecture Open to meet the particular needs of the projects. (Tavakolian. 1989) Architecture closed to give greater control to the processing and broadcasting of information. (Sheth, Larson, 1990) Information access Decentralized Centralized Strategic role of SI development Wide, linked to all the propositions Limited to the execution of strategy decided elsewhere. Acquisition of technologies /development Often external given the diversity of needs Internal Management style Participative Formal and hierarchical Lean - ENST Paris

Urbanization practices
Results : two types of IS urbanization… …The first IS urbanization is characterized by an infrastructure limited to storage and data center applications for and by each silo application …The second IS urbanization is characterized by accessible core data objects, wired business core infrastructure and local customization applications Lean - ENST Paris

Urbanization practices and strategic behavior:
Prospection TFE B PdL Defense I. BA Architecture … Tree structure: based on the occasional interoperability between specific applications (Cimsup/Agilya, Sage) Multiple database Partial integration by interface and ODBC standards Centralized: Operator authorization level low, controlled access to the database Strategic role of IS development … Support and operational role of the Computing management, relay of decisions between the management Acquisition of technologies/development Internal / external projects “Made to measure” developments Perpetuation of consultants Management style (and type of meta-project support) Hierarchical, functional and formal Need for an IT meta-project and management involvement Lean - ENST Paris
31
Urbanization practices and strategic behavior:
Prospection TFE B PdL Defense I. BA Architecture Modular: based on the architecture of SAP R/3 (FI, CO, HR, AM, MM, PM) around a pivot database (Oracle) One logical database: Oracle Global integration of data by homogenization and ERP standards Decentralized: authorization level of operators high, wide access to the database Tree structure: based on the occasional interoperability between specific applications (Cimsup/Agilya, Sage) Multiple database Partial integration by interface and ODBC standards Centralized: Operator authorization level low, controlled access to the database Strategic role of IS development Major role of the IS management both carrier of meta system and vector for new trades Support and operational role of the Computing management, relay of decisions between the management Acquisition of technologies/development External products Prototyping and parameter setting “portable” Gaining loyalty of sub-contractor Internal / external projects “Made to measure” developments Perpetuation of consultants Management style (and type of meta-project support) Participative and by project Need for a global meta-project for which the senior management and the executive committee are responsible Hierarchical, functional and formal Need for an IT meta-project and management involvement Lean - ENST Paris
32
Urbanization practices and strategic behavior: conclusion 1
We do not pretend that any company adopting a defender or prospector strategy will have an architecture corresponding to one of these two case studies, But, after Das et alii in a normative approach, then by a quantitative study carried out by Croteau, the qualitative approach illustrates and enriches our understanding of these types, and in particular the second both on an architectural level management level and an IS management level. Lean - ENST Paris
33
Urbanization practices and strategic behavior: conclusion 2
As far as openness is concerned, integration by interface can only be partial. However, this is not only practiced but desired in order to control the closure of architecture, mirroring the image of hierarchical and formal management as the I.B.A. case study shows. Lean - ENST Paris
34
Urbanization practices and strategic behavior: conclusion 3
The need to use outside developments doesn’t oppose the two types in a clear manner, in the case of the open system these resources are then internalized, even in the shape of a subsidiary company, whereas in the case of the closed system, external consultants are permanently on site. Lean - ENST Paris
35
Urbanization practices and strategic behavior: conclusion 4
appropriation of integration goes through a meta-project managed either with or without participation. In the case of open architecture, however, the importance of the commitment of the management team is decisive. It allows both global integration in the functional dimension by legitimizing a cross-functional approach that remains counter-cultural, (Capitaine, TFE, 2003), and to reassure the staff by effectively distinguishing between internal and external IS projects knowing that they share the same logical pivot database of system integration.
