5 EXERCISE 3 – TRANSLATING ABSTRACT NOUNS 1. Lintroduction du tabac en Europe fut une erreur. 2. Les enfants perdent beaucoup de temps à létude des langues étrangères, dit-il. 3. Les scientifiques ont énormément aidé les agriculteurs par le développement de nouvelles techniques. 4. Ces efforts n'ont pu empêcher l'apparition d'une dangereuse maladie. 5. Les fondateurs de la ville ont également veillé à la constitution d'un club sportif pour femmes. 6. L'installation ces dernières années d'une série de stations scientifiques a contribué à améliorer considérablement nos connaissances dans ce domaine. 7. 7 N EWSPAPER HEADLINES A good headline must: Fit the story and tell the reader clearly what its about Make the reader interested in the story and want to read on On a front page, be visually striking enough to grab the eye of readers at stations, newsagents, newsstands, etc. Reflect the newspapers attitude to the news story Fit into a very limited space

12 N EWSPAPER HEADLINES Read the following outline story. With the same partner, try and create two different headlines of your own for the story. Each of your two headlines should: Be written for a broadsheet and for a tabloid Use one of the language techniques we discussed earlier, in order to present the story in a different way
