The four major groups are Remote Office, Contractors/Task workers, Office/Knowledge workers and the Powerusers or developers. The remote office or branch office users can often vary in number and size. Depending on numbers of offices, then having a low cost per desktop is a concern. Often lacking a dedicated data center, floor space is almost always non-existent. Persistent desktops are often recommeneded, but could be a mix. Solution can be aimed at being on-site and not in a central datacenter. Task works or contractors. These workers are usually using the basic office applications. These desktops can be the same and disposable. Only the user data needs to be saved and backed up not the desktop themselves. Because of this, non-persistent is recommended. This also mean a minimum amount of storage needs to be assigned per desktop along with a minimum amount of RAM. Knowledge workers are typically seen as “office” employees. They usually have more than the basic applications that Task workers have and because of that- may require more memory. Persistent is often used because specific applications or department applications may be used and those need to stay on the desktop (as opposed to task workers where all apps can be used over and over).   Developers and PowerUser requirements often vary greatly. It’s often too time consuming to have to install/reinstall applications constantly so persistent is often used. Developers compiling and the applications they use can be disk intensive (>50 IOPs average-low end sustained). Admin rights are often granted for registry access as well as the ability to install applications themselves. If you can think ahead of time of the end-users will be using the virtual desktop infrastructure- it will greatly increase the success of the roll-out and end-user acceptance.
