Le superlatif

The most… le la + plus + adjective (agrees with noun adj. les is modifying) le + plus + adverb le + plus + de/d’ + noun(s)

The least le la + moins + adjective (agrees with noun adj. les is modifying) le + moins + adverb le + moins + de/d’ + noun(s)

In English, we use the superlative to express the most/the least. We use it with adjectives, adverbs, and nouns. The superlative will function the same way in French.

Superlative w/ adjectives Non-superlative sentence: I have a handsome cat. J’ai un beau chat. Superlative sentences. I have the most handsome cat. J’ai le plus beau chat. I have the least handsome cat. J’ai le moins beau chat.

Singular, masculine adjective J’ai un beau chat. J’ai le plus beau chat. J’ai le moins beau chat.

Singular, feminine adjective J’ai une belle soeur. J’ai la plus belle soeur. J’ai la moins belle soeur.

Adjectives, plural J’ai de beaux chats. J’ai les plus beaux chats. J’ai les moins beaux chat. J’ai de belles soeurs. J’ai les plus belles soeurs. J’ai les moins belles soeurs.

Superlative with adverbs Non-superlative sentence: My husband travels often. Mon mari voyage souvent. Superlative sentences. My husband travels the most often. Mon mari voyage le plus souvent. My husband travels the least often. Mon mari voyage le moins souvent.

Superlative with nouns Non-superlative sentence: He has money. Il a de l’argent. Superlative sentences. He has the most money. Il a le plus d’argent. He has the least money. Il a le moins d’argent.

Note: It is appropriate to say: Elle a le plus beau chat. OR Elle a le chat le plus beau. (depending on emphasis) MAIS Elle a la maison la plus moderne. Why could there only be one order here?
