-ER = 1 ER GROUPE In French, there are 3 different groups that distinguish how we will conjugate it. The first, and the most common is the “-ER Group”. The very first step is to take the verb in the infinitive (in the –ER form), and remove the –ER…
JE = -E …and then add an -E Example: Le verbe CHANTER take off the –ER and add an -E Je chante !
TU = -ES …and then add an –ES Example: Le verbe JOUER take off the –ER and add -ES Tu joues au soccer/football
IL/ELLE/ON = -E …and then add an –E Example: Le verbe AIMER take off the –ER and add an -E Il aime le chocolat
NOUS = 0NS …and then add –ONS Example: Le verbe ÉCOUTER take off the –ER and add -ONS Nous écoutons de la musique
VOUS = -EZ …and then add an –EZ Example: Le verbe ÉTUDIER take off the –ER and add an -EZ Vous étudiez bien!
ILS/ELLES = -ENT …and then add –ENT Example: Le verbe REGARDER take off the –ER and add -ENT Ils regardent Netflix

**EXCEPTIONS There are always exceptions to the rule (ex/Aller = Je vais and not J’alle, Tu alles, Il alle) 1.If the verb contains a G, you will add an “e” depending on what follows it. Ex/ Manger = Je mange, Tu manges, Il mange (everything ) However…Nous mangeons, Vous mangez, Ils mangent If the verb contains a G that might end up next to an O or an A, you have to add an E to separate them
**EXCEPTIONS CONTINUED… 2. If the verb contains a C, you will add a “cédille”: Ç, depending on what follows it. Ex/ Commencer = Je commence, Tu commences, Il commence However…Nous commençons, Vous commencez, Ils commencent If the verb contains a C that might end up next to an O or an A, you have to add “the hook” (cédille) onto the bottom of the C to give it a “S” sound

NÉGATION So far, all the sentences that we’ve constructed have been in the affirmative. How would we change them to the negative? The French use two adverbs to indicate negation: Ne…Pas Together, they mean “Not”. They are always surrounding the verb in present tense.
