LES VERBES EN –ER (PRÉSENT) FSL - RÉVISION

-ER = 1 ER GROUPE In French, there are 3 different groups that distinguish how we will conjugate it. The first, and the most common is the “-ER Group”. The very first step is to take the verb in the infinitive (in the –ER form), and remove the –ER…

JE = -E …and then add an -E Example: Le verbe CHANTER take off the –ER and add an -E Je chante !

TU = -ES …and then add an –ES Example: Le verbe JOUER take off the –ER and add -ES Tu joues au soccer/football

IL/ELLE/ON = -E …and then add an –E Example: Le verbe AIMER take off the –ER and add an -E Il aime le chocolat

NOUS = 0NS …and then add –ONS Example: Le verbe ÉCOUTER take off the –ER and add -ONS Nous écoutons de la musique

VOUS = -EZ …and then add an –EZ Example: Le verbe ÉTUDIER take off the –ER and add an -EZ Vous étudiez bien!

ILS/ELLES = -ENT …and then add –ENT Example: Le verbe REGARDER take off the –ER and add -ENT Ils regardent Netflix

RÉCAPITULONS! SingularPlural 1 st person 2 nd person 3 rd person -E -ES -E -ENT -EZ -ONS

**EXCEPTIONS There are always exceptions to the rule (ex/Aller = Je vais and not J’alle, Tu alles, Il alle) 1.If the verb contains a G, you will add an “e” depending on what follows it. Ex/ Manger = Je mange, Tu manges, Il mange (everything ) However…Nous mangeons, Vous mangez, Ils mangent  If the verb contains a G that might end up next to an O or an A, you have to add an E to separate them

**EXCEPTIONS CONTINUED… 2. If the verb contains a C, you will add a “cédille”: Ç, depending on what follows it. Ex/ Commencer = Je commence, Tu commences, Il commence However…Nous commençons, Vous commencez, Ils commencent  If the verb contains a C that might end up next to an O or an A, you have to add “the hook” (cédille) onto the bottom of the C to give it a “S” sound

PRATIQUONS -(Aimer) Vous ____________ le printemps ou l’été? -(Gagner) Ils _____________ la médaille d’or. -(Habiter) On _____________ à Port Coquitlam. -(Nager) Nous _____________ dans la piscine. -(Oublier) Mlle Lo _____________ les questions. -(Parler) Jeanne et Marie _________________. -(Travailler) Tu ______________ fort! -(Chercher) Qui _______________ la réponse? aimez gagnent habite nageons oublie parlent travailles cherche

NÉGATION So far, all the sentences that we’ve constructed have been in the affirmative. How would we change them to the negative? The French use two adverbs to indicate negation: Ne…Pas Together, they mean “Not”. They are always surrounding the verb in present tense. Je mange du pizza (I eat pizza) = Je ne mange pas du pizza (I don’t eat pizza) Les Canadiens adorent Justin Bieber = Les Canadiens n’adorent pas Justin Bieber. Est-ce que tu aimes le cours de mathématiques? Non, je n’aime pas le cours de mathématiques.

TRADUISEZ -He doesn’t like cats. -No, I don’t sing. -They (fém) don’t dance. -Who doesn’t watch Netlfix? -We aren’t studying. -Il n’aime pas les chats. -Non, je ne chante pas. -Elles ne dansent pas. -Qui ne regarde pas Netflix? -Nous n’étudions pas/On n’étudie pas
