Muharram- Bey: The Mayor of El-guizireh and then Alexandria, Muharram Bey was the husband of Tafida Hanem daughter of Mohamed Ali, in 1826 he became the commander of the Egyptian navy.

Genaclis: Mr. Genaclis was the owner of great vineyards, he also owned the famous Genaclis distilleries. This area was known to produce famous wines during the Romains rule of Alexandria.

Genaclis: Mr. Genaclis est le propriétaire de vignoble et des fameuse distillerie Genaclis. La régions des vignoble a été déjà très célèbre par la qualité des vins produit pendant le règne Romain a Alexandrie.

Nozha

Kom el Shaafa: The name comes from broken parts of clay due to the fact that piles of clay were found in this area. The old city of Rhakotis was destroyed by an earth- quake before Alexander the great established Alexandria over the ruins.

Kom el Shaafa: La désignation vient de mot brisures dargile due a la haute concentration dargile casse trouvé dans la région. Alexandre le grand bâti la nouvelle ville dAlexandrie sur le ruine de la vielle ville de Rhakotis détruite par un tremblement de terre.

El-Agami: This white sand area famous for figs was named after the sheikh Mohamed El-Agamy a holly and pious man.

El-Agami: Les Sable blancs de cette région fameuse pour ses figues prend le nom du Sheikh Mohamed El- Agamy un homme saint de la région.

Bianchi - Agami

Selsela: (chain) Originally a series of little Islands were in this area, later a Chain was installed to stop people from reaching the Islands.

Selsela: (chaine) A lorigine une série diles en forme de chaine se trouvent a cet endroit, plus tard une chaine en métal est installer pour empêcher le passage.

Mariout: The name derives from Lake Mareotis, the name of the lake in this area as it used to be known in ancient times.

Mariout: Le nom nest nul autre quune déformation de lancien nom du lac Maréotis, selon les textes Grecques.

Bacos: Named after Mr. A. Bacos a famous cotton merchant at the time. Another interpretation says the name derives from the God BACHUS.

Smouha: Joseph Smouha a Jewish Iraqi trader and entrepreneur, worked in 1924 on drying the HADARA Lake known at the time as Saliére Ragab Pasha.

Smouha: Joseph Smouha un commercent et entrepreneur juif dIraq prend le projet en 1924 dassainir le lac HADARA connu sous le nom les Saliére Ragab Pasha.

Glymonopoulos / St-Stefano

San-Stefano: The Tramway Co. gave this name to commemorate the defeat of Turkey by the Serbs with the help of Russia in 1874 in the battle of San-Stefano - A huge hotel was erected at the time. Rebuild in 2007 into a giant Mall/Hotel complex.

San-Stefano: La compagnie des Tramway donne le nom San Stefano a la région pour commémorer la défaite de la Turquie par les Serbes avec laide des Russe en 1874 lors de la bataille de San-Stefano – Un hôtel de luxe est bâtis lors a cette endroit. En 2007 un énorme complexe (Mall/Hôtel) remplace lhôtel.

El-Max: The name comes from the Arabic term Al-Makous or Customs since it was the area where merchandises used to arrive.

El-Max: Le nom diminutif de El-Max provient du terme Arabe Al-Makous terme voulant dire douanes, car la région reçoit les marchandises provenant de létranger.

Palais de Montazah Palace

Laurent: Monsieur Laurent was the owner of a famous cigarette factory in the 19 century, his huge villa has been transformed lately into a school.

Laurent: Monsieur Laurent, un industriel propriétaire dune grande manufacture de cigarette dans les années 1900, donne son nom au quartier. Son immense villa vas être transformé plus tard en école.

Sidi-Bishr #3 (Miami)

Saba-Pasha: Saba Pasha was the director of the Egyptian postal system and later became minister of finance.

Saba-Pasha: Saba Pacha est nul autre que le directeur des postes Égyptiennes qui devient par la suite ministre des finances.

Montazah

Bulkeley, Fleming & Shultz: Were all founding members of the El-Raml (the sands) Tramway system to serve then an unpopulated area close to downtown Alexandria.

Bulkeley, Fleming & Shultz: Sont des membres fondateurs du Tramway de (El-Raml) les sables, un nouveau système de communication qui va desservir un endroit peu peuplé dans la région proche dAlexandrie.

Zezinia: The Count of Zezinia was a famous cotton trader and had build a big villa in a relatively new location, that will became later known as Zezinia.

Zezinia: Le conte de Zezinia un marchand de coton bâtis une énorme villa dans une région relativement nouvelle qui deviendras le quartier de Zezina.

The Eastern Harbour

Victoria: The Victoria college that was originally built in 1901 in Lazarita, it was later moved to the present location during the reign of Queen Victoria in 1904.

Victoria: Le collège Victoria fut bâti en premier a Lazarita en 1901 puis a changer de location avec des nouvelles bâtisses durant le règne de la Reine Victoria en 1904 dans le quartier qui portera le nom Victoria.

Mer Méditerranée / Mediterranean sea

Ras-El-Tin: A peninsula famous then for Figs thus Ras et-Tin (Cape of Figs).

Ras-El-Tin: A péninsule reconnue pour ses figues donnera le nom au quartier de Ras et-Tin (Cape des figues).

Plage / Beach

El-Wardany: The Name is a deformation of the English word WARD to designate the storage area of the customs.

El-Wardany: Ce nom provient dune déformation du mot anglais WARD qui désigne la location des magasins destiné aux douanes.

Mandara

Lazarita: A derivative from the Italian words Lazar ( Lazarus resuscitated from the dead..! ) It is there that the Quarantine for travelers coming from the east was established.

Lazarita: Ce nom provient dune déformation du mot Italien Lazaros ( Lazare qui est ressuscité des morts ….!) Cest a cet endroit que fut établie une Quarantaine pour accueillir les voyageurs arrivant de lest.

Aboukir

Aboukir: Is the name of the priest and the Martyr Cyrus born in Alexandria at the end of Emperor Diocletian era. The Pharaonic name of the city was Kanoub that became Kanoubis during the Ptolemy reign.

Aboukir: Abou Kir est le nom Arabe du prêtre et martyre Cyrus né a Alexandrie a la fin du règne de lEmpereur Dioclétien. Du temps des Pharaons le nom de la ville était Kanoub puis se transforma en Kanoubis durant le règne Ptolémée.
