Stem Changers Chapitre 4

Révisons: Les Verbes en –ER (regarder) How do you conjugate an –ER verb? Take off the –ER of the verb and then add your endings. Ex. Regarder – ER = regard- + (e, es, e, ons, ez, ent)

Stem Changers On the next slide, look at how the following verbs change their stem. After you have copied them down, be ready to tell me how they stem change.

Acheter: to buy J’achète Tu achètes Il/Elle/On achète Nous achetons Vous achetez Ils/Elles achètent

Préférer: to prefer Je préfère Tu préfères Il/Elle/On préfère Nous préférons Vous préférez Ils/Elles préfèrent

Nettoyer: to clean Je nettoie Tu nettoies Il/Elle/On nettoie Nous nettoyons Vous nettoyez Ils/Elles nettoient

Acheter: E -> È Acheter is an “E to È” verb. That means that the “e” in the stem changes to an “è”. The stem change only occurs in the je, tu, Il/Elle/On, and Ils/Elles conjugation for pronunciation reasons. Other verbs like “acheter”: amener (to bring [people])*, emmener (to take along [people], lever (to raise), promener (to take for a walk)

Amener* and Apporter Both verbs mean “to bring” Amener = to bring [PEOPLE] Apporter = to bring [THINGS] Amener is a stem changer (E -> È) Apporter is NOT a stem changer, it is a regular –ER verb.

Préférer: É -> È Préférer is an É -> È verb. That means that the SECOND “É” in the stem becomes an “È”. The stem change only occurs in the je, tu, Il/Elle/On, and Ils/Elles conjugation for pronunciation reasons. Other verbs like “préférer”: espérer (to hope), répéter (to repeat)

Nettoyer: Y -> I Nettoyer is an Y -> I verb. That means that the “Y” in the stem becomes an “I”. The stem change only occurs in the je, tu, Il/Elle/On, and Ils/Elles conjugation for pronunciation reasons. Other verbs like “nettoyer”: balayer (to sweep), envoyer (to send), essayer [de] (to try on [to]), payer (to pay)
