Questions!?!

How to ask a question There are 3 ways to ask a question in French. They are… To use “Est-ce que…” To change your tone of voice To make an inversion (to swap around word order)

Est-ce que… Leave the verb as it is and insert “est-ce que” 1. Elle travaille = she works Est-ce qu’elle travaille? = Does she work? 2. Il habite = He lives Où est-ce qu’il habite? = Where does he live?

Tone of voice You can make a question by giving a questioning tone to a statement. Tu travailles = you are working Tu travailles? = Are you working This is common in conversation but not in written French

Inversion To make a question turn the verb around and join with a hyphen. 1. Tu fais = you are doing Que fais-tu? = What are you doing? 2. Vous allez = you go Pourquoi allez-vous ..?= why are you going…?

Inversion 2 When, as a result of inversion, two vowels meet, a t must be inserted with hyphens either side. Quand arrive-t-il? = When is he arriving? Comment va-t-elle…? = How is she going to…? The inversion is hardly ever used with “je” except for “Puis-je” (Q form of “je peux)

1. Exchange your notes with your partner 2. Practise with your partner Je vais bien Je mange avant de sortir. Je révise pour mon oral. Nous détestons One Direction.

Question words Qui = Who? Quoi / Que = What? Pourquoi = Why? Quand = When? Où = Where? Comment = How? Combien = How much / how many? These usually go at the front of the question (although in conversation they may be placed at the end…p. ex Tu fais quoi? Vous voulez combien?)

Time to practise 1. Who do you like? 2. What does he do? 3. Why does she eat snails? 4. When are we going on holiday? 5. Where does he live? 6. How does she go to school? 7. How much do I earn?

Qui aimes-tu? 2. Qu’est-ce qu’il fait? 3. Pourquoi est-ce qu’elle mange des escargots? 4. Quand est-ce que nous partons en vacances? 5. Où habite-t-il? 6. Comment est-ce qu’elle va à l’école? 7. Combien est-ce que je gagne?

Use of “Quel” The French word for “which” or “what” is Quel (m) / Quelle (f) / Quels (mpl) / Quelles (fpl). It is an adjective and has to agree with the noun it describes. 1. Tu lis quel journal? = What paper (m) do you read? 2. Quelle région préfères-tu? = Which region (f) do you prefer? 3. Quels livres est-ce qu’il veut acheter? = Which books does he want to buy?

Time to practise “quel” 1. Dans ____ métiers voyage-t-on beaucoup? 2. ____ problèmes as-tu au lycée? 3. ____ temps fait-il? 4. ____ qualifications as-tu? 5. ____ sports pratiquez-vous? 6. On mange dans ____ restaurant ce soir?
