Direct Object Pronouns In French

In French, as in English, a direct object receives the action of the verb. For example, in the sentence below: Robert lit le journal. subject verb direct object

In French, as in English, a direct object can be replaced by a direct object pronoun. Look at the following examples in English: Robert reads the newspaper. Robert reads it. I invite my friends to the party. I invite them to the party. In the sentences above, it and them are direct object pronouns. The same thing can happen in French.

Direct Object Pronouns in French me, m’ (me) te, t’ (you, sing. inf.) le, l’ (him; it, masc.) la, l’ (her; it, fem.) nous (us) vous (you, plural / formal) les (them)

Placement I. Used with one verb When used with one verb, direct object pronouns are placed directly before the verb: Je connais Marie-Claire. Je la connais. Tu ne crois pas Julie et moi? Tu ne nous crois pas? Nous rencontrons les amis au cinéma. Nous les rencontrons au cinéma.
