L’imparfait

When do you use it? You use the imperfect to describe something that you USED TO do. Eg: When I was little, I used to play football Quand j’étais petit(e), je jouais au foot.

How do you form it? Take the ‘nous’ form of the present tense... Eg: (nous) regardons. Take off the ‘ons’ ending… Eg: regard... Add the following endings to the stem… - ais - ait / ait / ait - ions - iez - aient / aient

Un exemple: ÉCOUTER Present tense of écouter: nous écoutons Remove the ‘ons’ ending: écout... Add the endings… j’écoutais I used to listen tu écoutais you used to listen il / elle / on écoutait he / she / one used to listen nous écoutions we used to listen vous écoutiez you used to listen ils / elles écoutaient they used to listen

IRREGULAR VERBS The stem of irregular verbs changes but the endings stay the same: The stem of ‘être’ (to be) is ‘ét…’   Verbs like ‘manger’ or ‘ranger’ take an extra ‘e’ in the ‘nous’ form. This is to make the ‘g’ sound. However, the extra ‘e’ is NOT needed before ‘i’.  Example: je mangeais / tu mangeais nous mangions  Similarly, with verbs like ‘commencer’, the final ‘c’ becomes ‘ç’ before ‘a’ or ‘o’ to make it sound soft. Verbs like ‘manger’ or ‘ranger’ take an extra ‘e’ in the ‘nous’ form.  Example: je commençais nous lançons
