Plus que parfait du Subjonctif Pluperfect Subjunctive

This is your last tense That’s right, this is the last new tense you will learn in French.

When is it used? ‘Concordance du temps’ - what you do to the left has to happen on the right. Je veux que - present tense, so needs present subjunctive je voulais que - imperfect, so needs imperfect subjunctive. j’avais voulu que - pluperfect, so needs pluperfect subjunctive.

Why would I use this? Pluperfect is the tense for what you did a long time ago and you aren’t sure when. It translates to have/had I have eaten mushrooms (I’m sure I have done it at some point) He had finished eating (It happened further in the past than whatever is coming next).

The left side review Remember, to form the pluperfect, you need Aux + P.P Etre er- é, ir- i, re-u Avoir in the imperfect

So, your aux looks like: Etre Avoir etais avais etait avait etions avions etiez aviez etaient avaient

Imperfect Subjunctive Now, the right side Pluperfect Subjunctive Aux + P.P. Etre er - é, ir - i, re - u Avoir Imperfect Subjunctive

Etre Avoir fusse eusse fusses eusses fût eût fussions eussions fussiez eussiez fussent eussent

Examples il avait voulu que je fusse allé. He had wanted me to have left. Nous avions été contents que elle fût sortie. We had been happy that she had left.
