This presentation uses a free template provided by FPPT.com The word plastic is derived from the Greek (plastikos) meaning capable of being shaped or molded. Plastics are a range of synthetic or semi-synthetic polymerization products that can be molded into a permanent object having the property of plasticity.

History The first synthetic plastic — Bakelite — was produced in 1907, and is said to mark the beginning of the global plastics industry.

However, rapid growth in global plastic production was not realized until the 1950s. Over the next 65 years, annual production of plastics increased nearly 200- fold to 381 million tones in 2015.

PLASTIC POLLUTION As plastic is composed of major toxic pollutants, it has the potential to cause great harm to the environment The accumulation of these products has led to increasing amounts of plastic pollution around the world. in the form of air, water and land pollution.

01 Low strength 02 Less dimensional stability over period of time 03 Sensitive to environment, moisture and chemicals 05 Poor machinability 04 Hardens and become brittle over time DISADVANTAGES OF USING PLASTICS

Plastics pollute beaches and oceans Plastics use has increased dramatically, resulting in a huge quantity of nearly indestructible, lightweight material floating in the oceans and eventually deposited on beaches worldwide. PLASTIC’S ADVERSE EFFECTS ON OUR ENVIRONMENT

Plastic bags litter the landscape Once they are used, most plastic bags go into landfill, or rubbish tips. Each year more and more plastic bags are ending up littering the environment. Once they become litter, plastic bags find their way into our waterways, parks, beaches and streets. PLASTIC’S ADVERSE EFFECTS ON OUR ENVIRONMENT

Plastic bags are non-biodegradable And one of the worst environmental effects of plastic bags is that they are non- biodegradable. PLASTIC’S ADVERSE EFFECTS ON OUR ENVIRONMENT

IMPACT ON MARINE ENVIRONME NT

Plastics plays the villain right from the stage of its production. The major chemicals that go into the making of plastic are highly toxic and pose serious threat to living beings of all species on earth.. Some of the constituents of plastic such as benzene are known to cause cancer. Plastic resins themselves are flammable and have contributed considerably to several accidents worldwide. PLASTICS EFFECTS ON HUMAN LIFE

Once plastics is produced, the harm is done once and for all. Plastic defies any kind of attempt at disposable it through recycling, burning, or landfilling. Recycling of plastic is associated with skin and respiratory problems, resulting from exposure to and inhalation of toxic fumes, especially hydrocarbons and residues released during the process. PLASTICS EFFECTS ON HUMAN LIFE

SOLUTIONS TO PLASTICS POLLUTION Reduce To efficiently reduce plastic pollution, there is an evident need of reducing our usage of plastic. It means changing our everyday behaviors an not using plastic when there is a better alternative to it and only using plastic when strictly necessary. Reuse Plastic may cause pollution when poorly managed but it has lots of advantages too, such as being resistant. Many plastic items can therefore be reused or used for different purposes. Before throwing plastic items, it is important to consider how they can be reused.

SOLUTIONS TO PLASTICS POLLUTION Recycle Plastic recycling consists of collecting plastic waste and reprocessing it into new products, to reduce the amount of plastic in the waste stream. Educate Another crucial solution is education in order to increase awareness and behavioral change.

This presentation uses a free template provided by FPPT.com Conclusion solving the problem of plastic pollution may seem as easy as just implementing recycling or cleaning up empty bottles, the truth is that the plastic causing the pollution can range in size from big to microscopic.
