CLIMATE CHANGE AND MIGRATION: MIGRANTS OR REFUGEES? Hatim El Otmani Winter University – Friday 02 February 2018

KEY WORDS ? HIDDEN KEY WORDS? Climate Change Migration Migrants Refugees Global Warming weather Asylum Seeker

Climate Vs Weather

IOM Definition of “Migrant” IOM defines a migrant as any person who is moving or has moved across an international border or within a State away from his/her habitual place of residence, regardless of (1) the person’s legal status; (2) whether the movement is voluntary or involuntary; (3) what the causes for the movement are; or (4) what the length of the stay is. A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so. War and ethnic, tribal and religious violence are leading causes of refugees fleeing their countries Convention
