Negativity in French Do “not” let the “ne…pas” in life bring you down. Learn how to handle them.

How to express the negative To express the idea of “not”, “doesn’t” or “don’t” in French, use “ne… pas.” Ne goes BEFORE your conjugated verb and pas FOLLOWS your conjugated verb. It makes an ice cream sandwich, with the ne…pas being the chocolate and the conjugated verb being the ice cream in the middle.

NOTHING can separate “ne…pas” from its conjugated verb. It’s like peanut better and nutella, they are meant to “stick” together. EXAMPLES: 1. J’ai la chaise bleue. (positive) Je n’ai pas la chaise bleue. (negative) conjugated verb conjugated verb negative words

More examples: Je n’ai pas les classeurs. Tu n’as pas l’ordinateur. Elle n’a pas l’Internet. Nous n’avons pas les chaises. Vous n’avez pas la télé. Ils n’ont pas Mme. Byers pour professeur. When you use the negative with <j’>, add the “e” back on to make it “je” and the NE PAS becomes N’ PAS to go around the “ai”.

Les exercices…. Tu as le cahier. Nous avons les stylos. J’ai la prof d’espagnol. Monique et Yann ont les devoirs.

Continuez… Vous avez les filles. David a le papier. J’ai les étudiants. Corinne et moi avons les trousses.
