The Subjunctive Mood… …saying what you want someone to do or what they must do… …expressing doubt, fear, denial… …used after certain conjunctions.

Mood - what’s that, in grammar? The indicative mood is used to report an action which has taken, is taking or will take place. The action does not depend on an opinion or condition. Use this for truth, fact or probability. Je sais qu’il part. I know he’s leaving. The subjunctive mood expresses an action which is dependent on a subjective idea, opinion or condition. The action is contrary to fact or possible, but not probable. Je veux qu’il parte. I want him to leave.

How to form the subjunctive Regular forms Start with the 3rd person plural present, then remove the -ent. Add the endings: -e, -es, -e, -ions, -iez, -ent. (Therefore, -er verbs look like present indicative in all but nous & vous forms, where they look like the imperfect.) The subjunctive clause is introduced by que, so it helps to learn the forms preceded by que.

Regular forms, examples parlerfinirvendre (ils parlent)(ils finissent)(ils vendent) je parleje finisseje vende tu parlestu finissestu vendes il parleil finisseil vende nous parlionsnous finissionsnous vendions vous parliezvous finissiezvous vendiez ils parlentils finissentils vendent

Des exemples... Il faut qu’elle attende ici. It is necessary that (she must) wait here. Je ne veux pas que tu sortes. I don’t want you to go out. Elle préfère que nous partions. She prefers us to leave. Il veut que nous mangions bien. He wants us to eat well.

Verbs with spelling changes in the subjunctive... Some verbs have spelling changes in the nous & vous forms. Those which have accent or spelling changes in the indicative nous & vous forms will also have these in the subjunctive. ex. ils achètent butnous achetions ils appellentbut vous jetiez ils envoientbutnous envoyions ils prennentbut vous preniez ils doiventbutnous devions ils boiventbutvous buviez ils viennentbutnous venions

Irregulars As you would expect, être & avoir don’t follow the rules!

More irregulars These others have regular subjunctive endings, but the bases are irregular and they may change in nous & vous. aller: aille, ailles, aille, allions, alliez, aillent faire: fasse, fasses, fasse, fassions, fassiez, fassent pouvoir: puisse, puisses, puisse, puissions, puissiez, puissent vouloir: veuille, veuilles, veuille, voulions, vouliez, veuillent savoir: sache, saches, sache, sachions, sachiez, sachent and, of course, those only used in 3rd person: falloir: il faillepleuvoir: il pleuve

Uses of the subjunctive... The subjunctive is used in clauses following verbs which involve desire, doubt, denial, necessity, fear & emotion. Of course, there are others; this is a start!

Étudiez... Je veux que tu conduises. I want you to drive. Elle craint que nous n’attendions pas. She’s afraid that we won’t wait. Il est heureux que vous puissiez venir. He is happy that you can come. I doubt that the politician’s telling the truth.

Other uses of the subjunctive... The subjunctive is also used after impersonal expressions of opinion or emotion, such as: il vaut mieux que, il faut que, il est nécessaire que, il est essentiel que, il est important que, il est indispensable que, il est possible que, il se peut que, il est impossible que, il est douteux que, il est peu probable que, il n’est pas certain que, c’est/il est dommage que, il est triste que, il est étonnant que, il est honteux que, il semble que... NB il me semble que is followed by the indicative - there is no doubt about what YOU think!

And a few more... Use the subjunctive after these conjunctions: avant que (+ ne)bien que/quoique en attendant quejusqu’à ce que non (pas) quesans que pour que/afin quede peur que (+ ne) pourvu queà moins que (+ ne) soit que...soit que... NB The ‘ne’ used with some of these is not negative.

Traduisez... Before he leaves, I’m going to say goodbye to him. She left without my seeing her. In order that (so) you understand, you must do the exercises. Provided that he comes back on time, we’re going to dine at 7 o’clock.

Subjunctive with Indefinites The subjunctive is also used after some indefinite words, such as: si...quehowever... quel (le)(s) que...whatever... qui que...whoever... quoi que...whatever... où que...wherever...

Traduisez... However intelligent he may be, he’ll have to study in order that he understand. Whatever your problems, you’ll be able to resolve them. Whoever you may be, you can’t do that. Wherever you may go, I’m going to follow you.

Subjunctive in 3rd person commands & affirmations The subjunctive is used as an imperative in 3rd person, in such expressions as: Vive la reine!Long live the Queen! Ainsi soit-il!So be it! It is also used in these affirmations: que je sacheas far as I know pas que je sachenot that I know autant que je sacheas much as I know Personne n’est à la porte, que je sache.

Doubt... Use the subjunctive when doubt is implied after rien, personne & quelqu’un. - This time the sentence is indicative, as there is no doubt.

Superlatives Use the subjunctive in a relative clause after a superlative. Also after seul.
