Conclusions … Single-Cell PCR/RFLP analyses allow cheap and rapid processing of a high number of samples collected over large geographic and temporal scales in the pelagic realm. The molecular biogeographic patterns are relatively simple and stable between basins. Cosmopolitan, globally distributed species with extremely high ecological/genetic plasticity do not seem to exist in the plankton. They are in fact monophyletic groups of sister species having specific, and often allopatric biogeographic ranges. There is a significant decoupling between morphologic and genetic differentiations in both foraminifers and coccolithophores.

Simple spatio-temporal disconnection between The morphological and genetic/ecologic differentiations Actively ongoing process of creation/extinction of biological species with different ecological ranges.
