Les pronoms d’objet direct (Direct Object pronouns)

What IS a direct object? A direct object answers the question WHAT? or WHO? Examples: English French I write a letter. J’écris une lettre. (I write what? A letter) (J’écris quoi? Une lettre.) We see our teacher. On voit notre professeur. (Who do we see? Our teacher) (On voit qui? Notre professeur)

What is a Direct Object Pronoun? A direct object pronoun REPLACES a direct object. Examples: with D.O. with D.O. pronoun I write a letter. I write it. We see our teacher. We see him/her.

What ARE the French D.O. pronouns? me* (me) nous (us) te* (you) vous (you all or formal) le (him/it) - la (her/it) les (them) *me and te become moi and toi when used in affirmative commands.

Where are they placed in the sentence? In English, pronouns are placed after the verb. In French, pronouns are placed BEFORE the verb. J’aime mon chien. J’aime mon chien (le) Je l’aime. (neg.: je ne l’aime pas) Il a invité mes amis et moi. Il a invité mes amis et moi (nous) Il nous a invités. (neg.: il ne nous a pas invités)

Where are they placed in the sentence(2)? If there is an INFINITIVE, the pronoun is placed before THAT INFINITIVE. Je vais faire mes devoirs. Je vais faire mes devoirs  (les) Je vais les faire. Je veux voir Pierre et toi après le cours. Je veux voir Pierre et toi après le cours (vous) Je veux vous voir. PRACTICE!

Where are they placed in the sentence(3)? EXCEPTION: In affirmative commands, the pronoun is placed AFTER the verb, and CONNECTED to it with a hyphen. Écoutez-moi bien! Listen to me carefully! Regardons-le! Let’s watch it! Be careful! Negative commands are not part of this exception! Ne le regardons pas! Let’s not watch it!
