Les pronoms compléments d’object direct et indirect Direct and Indirect Object pronouns

1. Indirect Object Pronouns

Les pronoms d’objet indirect Indirect objects are the people in a sentence to/for whom the action of the verb occurs; eg. I’m talking to Pierre (To whom am I talking? > Pierre) I’m talking to him eg. He buys books for the students. (For whom does he buy books? > The students) He buys books for them Indirect object pronouns are the words that replace the indirect object, and they usually refer to a person.

Verbs which are followed by à These pronouns are often used with verbs followed by à: parler à (to talk to) demander à (to ask) dire à (to say to) donner à (to give to) téléphoner à (to phone) offrir à (to offer to) écrire à (to write to) répondre à (to reply to) Exception: penser à quelque chose (to think about something) uses the direct object pronoun.

Some examples I’m talking to him Je lui parle I’m giving (to) you some bread Je vous donne du pain She wrote to me Elle m’a écrit I phone (to) her on a Sunday Je lui téléphone le dimanche He buys books for them /he buys them books Il leur achète des livres

The Indirect Pronouns me/m’ to me te/t’ to you(s) lui to him/her/it So in French indirect object pronouns replace the names of people or nouns that come after the prepositions à (to) or pour (for). The indirect object pronouns are; me/m’ to me te/t’ to you(s) lui to him/her/it nous to us vous to you(pl) leur them * Unlike English the indirect object pronouns are placed in front of the conjugated verb.

Maintenant à vous lui Je ____ parle (I’m talking to her) Il ____ achète des biscuits (He buys me biscuits) Nous ____ avons écrit (We wrote to them) Tu ___ donnes des tickets (You give him tickets) Ils ____ ont téléphoné (They phoned you) lui m’ leur lui t’

2. Direct Object Pronouns

Les pronoms d’objet direct The term pronoun refers to the special words like English me, him, it etc that are used to 'stand in for' a noun or noun phrase to avoid repeating nouns. For example, instead of saying John saw the postman John saw him.

Direct object pronouns are words that replace the direct object. Eg. “Marie was at school today. When I saw Marie I smiled” It’s more natural to say “When I saw her I smiled “ The direct object is the person or thing that receives the action of the verb in a sentence. i.e. Marie To find the direct object in a sentence, ask the question Who? or What?

The Direct Object Pronouns are:- me me te you le (l’) him, it (masc) la (l’) her, it (fem) nous us vous you les them *The direct object pronouns are placed in front of the verb.

Some examples Je mange la pizza - Je la mange Il voit la jeune fille - Il la voit Je déteste les légumes – Je les déteste Tu n’aimes pas le sport – Tu ne l’aimes pas Nous regardons les livres - Nous les regardons Tu achètes une magazine - Tu l’achètes Ils regardent le film - Ils le regardent

Entrainez-vous Translate these questions and answers into English. 1. Tu aimes Céline Dion? – Non, je la déteste. 2. Tu as tes devoirs? – Non, je les ai laissés à la maison. 3. Où est ta veste? – Je l’ai perdu. 4. Tu t’entends bien avec ta mère? – Oui, je l’aime bien. 5. Tu as vu mon porte-monnaie? – Oui tu l’as mis dans la cuisine sur le frigo.

Maintenant à vous I see him – Je _____ vois He hates them – Il _________ déteste We help you – Nous ______ aidons They look at me – Ils _____ regardent She listens to us – Elle _______ écoute You find him – Vous ______ trouvez She writes it – Elle _____ écrit I eat it (f) – Je ______ mange

Les Réponses I see him – Je le vois He hates them – Il les déteste We help you(s) – Nous t’ aidons They look at me – Ils me regardent She listens to us – Elle nous écoute You find him – Vous le trouvez She writes it – Elle l’ écrit I eat it (f) – Je la mange

In the Perfect Tense, the past participle has to agree with a preceding direct object pronoun Le poisson? Oui, je l’ai mangé La pomme? Oui, je l’ai mangée Les croissants? Je les ai mangés Les poires? Je les ai mangées

Order of pronouns When 2 pronouns come together the order is shown below 1 2 3 me, te, nous, vous le, la, les lui, leur Eg. Je te le donne – I give it to you il nous les montre – He shows them to us Tu les lui donne – You give them to him
