The Imperfect Tense(l’imparfait) The imperfect tense expresses what used to happen or what was happening. It also describes events that happened in the past. Finally it is used to talk about things that regularly happened in the past. Examples: I used to like swimming but now I don’t. I was eating my dinner when the phone rang. The taxi driver didn’t know where the bar was. The film was amazing! Every day I swept the floor and tidied up.

The difference between the perfect and the imperfect tense. Perfect To talk about an event which is now finished. Examples: I went to town (yesterday) I played football (last week) I ate snails (last year) Imperfect To describe an event in the past or say what you used to do (regularly) Examples: It was sunny I used to like Kylie I always went to Church

The imperfect tense of the verb ‘jouer’=to play Je jouais tu jouais il/elle on jouait nous jouions vous jouiez ils/elles jouaient This is not how the grammar books teach it. I think this way is easier to use but it means there are some exceptions to the rule above. For MOST verbs Take the infintive verb. Remove the –er or -re and add the endings as highlighted in red.
