Les Questions d’Information (Information questions)

Question word + Est-ce que Review: Est-ce que is an expression used to begin a “yes” or “no” question. Ex: Est-ce que tu aimes danser? Est-ce que tu es americain? BUT “Est-ce que” is also used in combination with OTHER question words to find more specific information.

Question word + Est-ce que Where = Où Ex: Où est-ce que tu habites? When = Quand Ex: Quand est-ce que tu fais les devoirs? At what time = À quelle heure? Ex: À quelle heure est-ce que vous travaillez?

Question word + Est-ce que How = Comment Ex: Comment est-ce que tu chantes? Bien? Why = Pourquoi Ex: Pourquoi est-ce que tu n’étudies pas? Response: Because = Parce que Ex: …parce que je suis fatigué! (don’t use “est-ce que” with “parce que” – only in questions)

Est-ce qu’/ Parce qu’ Of course, before a vowel, “Est-ce que” becomes “Est-ce qu’” Ex: Quand est-ce qu’Anne voyage en France? Pourquoi est-ce qu’Henri mange des escargots? AND Parce que becomes parce qu’ Ex: Jean mange parce qu’il a faim.

Questions without est-ce que In casual conversation, est-ce que can be left out by placing the question word at THE END of the sentence. Ex: Vous habitez où? Elle dance pourquoi? On mange à quelle heure? Voice inflection will give the sentence a clear meaning.

Lecon 8B – More question words! Use expressions with “QUI” to talk about people Qui = Who(m)? Ex: Qui est-ce que tu invites chez toi? À qui = To whom? Ex: À qui est-ce que tu téléphone? De qui? = About whom? Ex: De qui est-ce que tu parles?

Qui expressions Avec qui = with whom? Avec qui est-ce que tu étudies? Pour qui = for whom? (not to be confused with “pourquoi”—why) Pour qui est-ce que tu travailles?

Qui = Who AND Whom Don’t worry about choosing between Who and Whom in French!! Qui means both!! Ex: For whom do you work? (Pour qui est-ce que tu travailles?) Who lives here? (Qui habite ici?) Who likes pizza? (Qui aime la pizza?) Notice that conjugating a verb for QUI = conjugation for IL or ELLE.
