Gospel : a spiritual journey

The story of 20th-century music began on the slave plantations of the Southern United states. Where was modern music born? “on the slave plantations of the Southern United states.” Africans taken to America couldn’t play their traditional music because drums were forbidden. Masters thought that slaves could use drums to send messages to each other and organize a revolt. Which instrument mustn't you play? The drums: Why was it impossible to play the drums? “slaves could use drums to send messages organize a revolt.”

What was it possible to do? “They were permitted to sing” They were permitted to sing as they worked, it was considered good for morale. Their song took the traditional ‘call and response’ style of much African singing. What was it possible to do? “They were permitted to sing” Slaves adapted the songs Protestant preachers organized meetings. Slaves couldn’t participate but they heard the hymns and adapted them. This was the start of gospel music, you can hear in almost every Black church in every city of America. What type of music is gospel? Religious “Hymns”

Go Down Moses When Israel was in Egypt land Let me people go Oppressed so hard they could not stand So the Lord said: “Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt's land Tell old Pharaoh, to let my people go” So Moses went to Egypt land Let my people go He made old Pharaoh understand Yes the Lord said: “Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt's land Tell old Pharaoh, to let my people go” Thus spoke the Lord, but Moses said, “Let my people go If not, I'll strike your firstborn dead Let my people go”
