Like the passé composé, Limparfait is a verb form that is also used to describe things that happened in the past, but describes how people or things were or used to be, conditions as they were or used to be and actions that took place repeatedly in the past. Note the following examples: Je portais un jean. Nous attendions nos amis.
The imparfait consists of one word, unlike the passé composés two word formation. For each verb (except être), the imperfect is formed by dropping the –ons from the nous form conjugation, and then adding the following endings. Nous form of verb, drop the -ons + appropriate endings.
The chart below indicates the proper endings to add for each subject pronoun (after finding the nous forms stem). Je -aisNous -ions Tu -aisVous -iez Il -aitElles -aient Ex: Avoir= nous avons=av + ending Vous aviez faim.
The imparfait forms of être Use ét- and then add imparfait endings: jétaisnous étions Tu étaisvous étiez Il/elle/on étaitIls/Elles étaient
