Les pronoms des objets indirects

Indirect objects answer the question to whom. In French the pronouns will replace à or pour plus a person or animal. I am talking to the girl. The girl is the indirect object.

Les pronoms des objets indirects me – to me te – to you nous – to us vous – to you all lui – to him / her /it leur – to them

present tense The indirect objects will go in the same place as the direct objects. They will go in front of the conjugated verb in the present tense if there is not an infinitive. I am talking to the girl. Je parle à la fille. Je lui parle.

Children obey their parents. Les enfants obéissent à leurs parents. Ils leur obéissent. We are calling our friends. Nous téléphonons à nos amis. Nous leur téléphonons.

Le passe compose The indirect objects will go in front of the helping verb in the passe compose. The past participle will not agree with the indirect object. He told the story to me. Il a dit l’histoire a moi. Il m’a dit l’histoire.

They sent a gift to my friends. Ils ont envoyé un cadeau à mes amis. Ils leur ont envoyé un cadeau. His parents gave him money. Ses parents ont donné de l’argent à lui. Ses parents lui ont donné de l’argent.

L’infinitif The indirect object pronoun will come before the infinitive. She wants to talk to him. Elle veut parler à lui. Elle veut lui parler.

commands In positive commands, the indirect object pronouns will go after the verb. In negative commands, they go in their normal place. Give them the paper. Donne la papier à eux. Donne-leur la papier.
